Elstree Studios, is a generic term which refers to several current and demolished British film and TV studios based in or around Borehamwood and the village of Elstree in Hertfordshire. Production studios and stages, have been located in the area since 1914 when film production began.
Glenhurst designed and installed, externally weatherproof Air Handling Equipment, to supply the film stage during filming.
A gas fired heater was integrated into the AHU, with cooling provided by heat pumps to evaporator coil, housed in a separate section of the unit. Interlocked controls were incorporated, to ensure neither heating nor cooling services, could operate simultaneously.
Extremely quiet operation, with high volume, low velocity air flow is essential, which on commissioning, Glenhurst achieved satisfactorily.
A relatively short and compact project, Glenhurst are delighted to be have been involved in and production of an interesting, specialised and successful solution, for Elstree Studios, the Client.
Time Square, is the building at the heart of Bracknell Forest Council’s operation and all the Council services, they provide to the community.
Glenhurst were employed by their appointed main contractor, to carry out a 16 week programme replacement, of roof mounted air handling and chilled water, equipment.
The plan was to replace the substantial, but failing AHU’s and Chilled Water Units, with new.
However, the services had to be maintained during the equipment change over, to ensure suitable conditions of ventilation and temperature, for the office staff. In conjunction with the main contractor, Glenhurst devised a method statement to achieve this.
Over an ongoing progress of weekend change-overs, replacement AHU’s and Chillers were delivered during Sunday road closures, outside of Times Square. Existing units were disconnected, lifted by crane off the roof, followed in quick succession by the hoisting of the new units into position, from the delivering haulage vehicles.
To maintain operation, temporary connections were made to air and water services, exposed by the equipment removals from the remaining equipment, until the new replacement units could be reconnected, commissioned and set to work. This process was repeated over successive weekends during the programme, until completion was achieved.
The whole project replacement went completely to plan, on time and budget. A significant mark of the “can-do” spirit, which Glenhurst employ, to successfully achieve a positive outcome to very difficult challenges.
